Gold and Siver Awards
Attention: All girls working on their Gold Award should e-mail their Gold Award paperwork to GoldAward@girlscoutsksmo.org (see below for the forms packet) or mail it to one of the council offices and mark paperwork ‘Attention: Girl Development Specialist’. When selecting a council office to send their Gold Award paperwork, girls should choose the office that is most convenient for them. This is the office where they will attend their Gold Award Committee meeting.

For example: A Manhattan, KS Girl Scout should send her send paperwork to the Topeka Resource Center, an Overland Park, KS Girl Scout should send her paperwork to the Kansas City Headquarters and a Maryville, MO Girl Scout should send her paperwork to the St. Joseph Resource Center ‘Attention: Girl Development Specialist’.

Questions: Contact GoldAward@girlscoutsksmo.org

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouts, earned by girls, 14-18 years old or in the 9th-12th grades. It is designed to be a culmination of opportunities that girls have learned and experienced in Girl Scouts.

Girls may start to work on the Gold Award, steps 1–4, when they are 14 years old (9th grade). They must be 15 years old (10th grade) to work on steps 5– 7 and must complete the requirements for the award by September 30 of the year they graduate from high school. Gold Award project teams will consist of no more than two girls. However, it is highly recommended that the Gold Award project be an individual effort.

The best projects are those that touch someone's life and then inspire others to continue the work you have started. The greatest projects are those that encompass:

  • Vision – seeing a need;
  • Passion – something you feel strongly about;
  • Longevity – inspiring others to continue the work you have started;
  • Connection – touching someone's life;
  • Community Impact – going beyond the Girl Scout community; and
  • Leadership – using communication, organization, and presentation skills.

This is why a project that just collects items or simply gives a performance is not considered a complete Gold Award project.

• Once approval has been received from the Gold Award Committee, a girl can begin work on her Gold Award.

• When she has finished her project, she needs to complete the appropriate forms and schedule an interview with her Gold Award Advisor. This interview is mandatory to complete the Gold Award.

The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award for girls ages 11 - 14, (grades, 6 - 9). The award recognizes girls’ efforts in a range of Girl Scout and community experiences as well as their commitment to working to enhance their lives and the lives of others.

Girls may work on the Silver Award with their troop or as an individual. They must be 11 years (6th grade) to work on steps 1 - 4. They can work on steps 5 and 6 when they are 12 (7th grade).

Cool Projects

Need some ideas for a Silver or Gold project? Have the girls contact area organizations, churches or schools and ask them what needs they have and how they can help them. With a little brainstorming the girls may come up with an idea that would be great for a Gold or Silver Award!

Silver Award Ideas:
  • Create a "science nook" at a school
  • Make puppet boxes to accompany stories for Daisy and Brownie Girl Scouts
  • Plan and coordinate a math day for younger girls
  • Put on a bicycle safety fair in your community
  • Start a sustainable recycling program at school
  • Write and perform a puppet play to teach children safety tips they can use when not in school

Gold Award Ideas:
  • Create a pedestrian safety campaign in your community; present the need for a stoplight in your community at a busy intersection to your local city council based upon your research.
  • Develop a breast cancer awareness program in your community for mothers and teens through local women's church groups.
  • Organize a chapter of SADD and plan a campaign for safe graduation parties in your community with representatives from the different high schools.
  • Develop an anti-bullying program for children that includes a drama component and peer counselors.
  • Plan and host a student art show as part of a community event.
  • Set up a cybercafe in a retirement home and train volunteers to help new users connect with information and their loved ones.
  • Train a guide dog for the blind and educate others about the project.
