Girl Scouts of NE Kansas & NW Missouri, the American Red Cross and American Canoe Association have teamed up to provide courses to qualify persons to supervise small-craft activities and instruct girls in the basics of canoeing and kayaking. The activity checkpoints in Safety-Wise require two certified adults to take girls canoeing or kayaking on a lake or river. The first and lead person will need to be certified as an Instructor and is in charge of teaching rescue and paddling skills to the girls. The second person must be certified as the Rescue person and is responsible for the safety of the group. No lifeguard is required as long as these certifications are met and life jackets are worn. Refer to the chart below to determine the course to take to reach the level of certification you would like to obtain.
Persons certified in Small Craft Safety or as a Canoeing/Kayaking Instructor will be expected to volunteer a minimum of eight hours per year to maintain certification with Girl Scouts of NE Kansas & NW Missouri.
